ITBP 8th Battalion Unit Hospital

This is the rear right side of ITBP (8th Battalion) Unit Hospital in Gauchar,  Chamoli District, Uttarakhand, India as seen from our house building. As of this time, there are two permanent doctors and one in contract. It is mostly OPD sessions from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm, Monday to Saturday. Admission happens every once in a while, especially during emergency cases. All deliveries are referred to Srinagar, Garhwal.

This hospital has 3 doctors' chambers.

~A guard is seen at the gate~
~Villagers can pass through this gate. We also used this road
towards Gauchar market -shortcut and as an exercise on the side~

Newly joined doctors will undergo training for 3 months at Mussoorie, Dehradun and then come back for general duty. Sometimes a doctor visits the posts as a routine. Sometimes, medical camps are held in various villages around Chamoli District (depending on the location of the battalion).
Once, in October, my husband, though a locum doctor, was sent to Ghamsali post, near Malari for a visit. I was allowed to go with him, of course.  Thanks to the CO at that time!
We trekked to Niti Valley until Bimlas where a few ITBP soldiers are posted.
We stayed at Ghamsali guest house.
The Ghamsali post has one AC posted all the time and other officers to constables.

Then he was also sent to do a 5-day medical camps in the Joshimath - Badrinath areas, where we halted at ITBP Joshimath guest house at night.

On the thrid year of working at ITBP, he was sent again to various medical camps around Gopeshwar areas where we stayed at Kotiyal sen.

  1. Dear Admin I wish to visit 8th Bn of ITBP Force, Gauchar from Almora (UK). Pl tell me the road map so enable to reach Goucher.. Thanks

  2. Hi Negi, I believe you have to go through Gwaldam to reach Gauchar. Here's a link to google maps: https://maps.google.co.in/

  3. Hi Spring Rain. I am fond of ITBP and was just wondering whether ITBP too have campus facilities like Army and Air Force. If yes, do they offer amenities for living quarters, park, schools, shopping complexes...please let me know. Thanks

    1. That actually depends on the battalion. Some battalions have better amenities while others have less especially the ones which are still being built. Living quarters are provided depending on your rank (AC to DC gets type 4 quarters, below that gets type 3, type 2 and type and bunkers for constables without family living with them. Park, well, the entire campus is a park since each battalion has a ground, and some have small space where children can play with slides, etc. Every ITBP campus has Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) attached with bus provision. No shopping complexes as such but there's always a canteen where many every day items are available for subsidized prices, and, of course, there is ration (atta, vegetables, dals, sugar, etc.) for the employed, and depending on the place there will always be small town nearby. The entire paramilitary is modeled on army, navy, and air force. ITBP, in fact, has better infrastructures than the rest of them. Hope you become fonder of ITBP after reading this.

    2. Thanks Spring Rain. This is the answer I was looking for quite sometime.

  4. Hi Spring rain I'm a Final medical student, enthusiastic to join ITBP,regarding the work of MO,how was it?average patient per day?

  5. Hi spring rain,I'm a final medical student enthusiastic to join ITBP, how's the normal workload of a MO?

    1. That depends on the where the battalion is. For main headquarters like in Dehradun(those which are bigger), there will be more. In Gauchar, average patient load is 10-25 per day, with rare emergencies. ITBP does not entertain public patients though in some occasion they do especially to those in the vicinity of the campus. Once joined, you'll undergo training then you'll be posted in the battalion you are assigned. In places/posts near the Himalayas where only medics are stationed per season, you'll be visiting them. Every year, ITBP conducts medical camps to villages as well.

I hope I answered your question.
